He examines the context of contemporary alternative agriculture, provides a rationale for the goal of complete freedom from pesticides, and offers a detailed description of practical steps for farmers wishing to do the same. Bender's comparative analysis of alternative and conventional farming systems focuses on convenience, management, conservation, productivity, and economic performance. He also identifies and responds to several central arguments against pesticide-free farming. A central objective throughout the book is to demonstrate both the practical and the conceptual plausibility of pesticide-free farming. The author also addresses the crucial role of livestock in pesticide-free farming. The discussion combines practical and theoretical topics, such as whether alternative farming would require too much livestock.

Wow! Someone who did something they believed in. Dec 28, 1998 I am not a farmer and I do not know much about agriculture. I came across this book by accident, but after reading the book I want to know more about the pesticde-free farming. Why? First, Bender has a style that makes you feel like you are sharing your thoughts around the fireplace with a knowledgable friend. Second, how many real life stories are there about someone who had a good idea and made it happen? As Bender says at the end of the preface; "For me, one of the sweetest moments of my life came in 1980, when I eliminated all pesticide use on my field crops, thereby successfully matching my practice with my convictions." How many of us would like to say that? This is a great story even if you know nothing about farming.
